Here are things we can do to legitimize and guide the ethical use of generative Artificial Intelligence. Five Deuces took a lot of heat on social media about this show, but through expert programming and planning, this exhibition was extremely successful in the St. Pete community and added a great deal of credibility to this gallery as the place to go for cutting-edge art.
No, AI Art isn't some miscellaneous oddity that you toss into the "other" bucket. It's a medium, a fresh one, and damn deserving of its own space. Just as we categorize oil paintings, sculptures, or lithographs, we need to categorize AI Art. Give it the recognition and platform it deserves. Without its own category, artists will try to shoehorn their AI Art into categories like digital art where it doesn’t belong. Some AI Artists will be deceptive about this, and therein lies the problem. If no category exists for it, then it will seek acknowledgment through subterfuge. If there is a category for it, it can exist and be judged on standards specifically for it without taking anything away from digital art.
2. Create Rules For Generative Artificial Intelligence Art.
Listen, every medium has its pitfalls. Every tool can be misused or used poorly. If the concern is that AI Art might step on other artists' toes or borrow too heavily from other artists, then let's lay down the law. Set up regulations and a clear framework on how artists can ethically use AI to ensure originality and respect for other artists. These sorts of frameworks exist to regulate the use of digital editing tools in fine art photography in shows and gallery exhibitions all over the world. Similar considerations can be implemented to keep AI art honest. But, to be fair, quality AI Artists should help create these rules and standards.
