The Eastern Black Swallowtail is one of those butterflies that gets more complicated the longer you look at it. The wings read as black at first, then the yellow spots, blue markings, and little orange eyespots start showing up. Here, the butterfly is fully open above yellow flowers and fresh foliage, giving all that pattern room to breathe. Familiar garden visitor, yes. Simple? Absolutely not.

Each Florida Field Guide Proof begins as a fully rendered digital study created before the original paint carving. These proofs are where I resolve the composition, color relationships, anatomy, texture, and overall visual direction before committing the image to dozens of painted layers and an irreversible carving process.

The 8×10 Open Edition Proof preserves that finished digital study as its own collectible work and offers a direct look at the image that guides the creation of the original carving.

Printed on premium 10 mil (0.25 mm) paper with a lustre finish, the surface has a soft, refined sheen without the high reflection of a glossy print. The finish supports rich color and crisp detail while resisting fingerprints, making it well suited for framing and everyday display. Paper is sourced from Japan.
